The trips are designed for small groups of six to eight people with their own guide. There will be a vehicle with a bike trailer, which will carry all our gear. Each day is a mix of hiking, biking and exploring, with the aim of making a continuous journey up the islands. The morning may be biking along quiet single-track roads with stunning views of the coast, dazzling white beaches, and passing through traditional crofts. The afternoon may be a walk along some to the stunning beaches, or hiking up some of the highest peaks in Barra, Uist and Harris.

At night we may be camping beside the sea, staying in local B&B’s or hostels or using our own Lodge accommodation. Wherever possible rooms with be based on two people sharing, so everyone can enjoy their own space and privacy.

camping in barraFollowing in the wake of our popular sea kayaking tours, we are now offering hiking and biking holidays. During May, June and July the islands burst into colour, as the machair becomes a carpet of flowers. Hiding in croft meadows is the extraordinary corncrake with its truly remarkable rasping call. Along deserted rocky beaches you can spend hours watching seals as they watch you. On headlands and hilltops stand the timeless reminders of these islands’ ancient Celtic roots.

Lying on the very fringe of Europe, the Outer Hebrides are amongst the most beautiful islands in the world. This string of islands offers fantastic scenery and wildlife, and make for a truly wonderful destination.

Hike and Bike is the perfect way to discover the islands. We take the two activities and add them together, which allows us to bike the best bits for biking and hike the best bits for hiking. By combining the two activities we are able to explore a number of the Outer Hebrides islands in one continuous journey.

The Hills

Although not as high as the mainland mountains these hills are both wild and rarely explored, giving the impression of much higher hills. The terrain is rugged, with little in the way of tracks, but the hard work is rewarded with absolutely stunning views in 360 degrees. Below your feet lies the latticework of land and water, whilst further a field lie the islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides. Although the islands are small an amazing 1000 species of wild flowers have been identified. During spring primroses festoon the dunes, whilst in summer blue squill, wild geranium, celandine and orchids carpet the machair.

The Coast

Biking along the shore gives us time to cliffs where the restless ocean has created natural arches and deep caves. Discover bays where seals haul themselves up on the rocks just meters from the shore, and visit sheltered lagoons where we may catch glimpses of otters. Sea Eagles and Golden Eagles can be spotted soaring over the islands: Guillemots and Kittiwakes nest on the high cliffs, whilst Oystercatchers and Plovers can be seen picking amongst the mussels and limpets on the seashore.

The History

looking out the tentOther walks take us along stunning white beaches and up to headlands where ancient duns stand. The islands have been inhabited for four thousand years, and evidence still remains of a Celtic presence. We will take time to discover brochs, stand-ing stones, Celtic crosses and the more recent clan castle and churches. Today the islands are home to fishermen and crofters and retains a strong sense of community where Gaelic spoken is widely spoken.

For over ten years we have offered sea-kayaking holidays throughout the Hebrides. Over this time we have gained a great insight into these beautiful islands. With this knowledge to hand we are developed two new ways in which to enjoy these wonderful islands We have always had a love for the great outdoors. We have spent hundreds of days exploring the hills and mountains of Scotland on foot, bikes and skis. Our love of the hills has taken us from the mountains of Britain, to the Alps, and the Canadian Rockies. We have also biked across Scotland (off road!) from Alaska to Vancouver on an eight-week camping trip. To ensure a relaxing, fulfilling and memorable experience we deliberately keep our groups small with a maximum of eight people. We are an eco-friendly company, and take every step possible to minimise our impact on these beautiful places. As we gently travel around our dedication to the environment will be clear.
